Fate for Taylor

Image
With Black History Month coming up, it's important to recognize political figures that made an impact in the civil rights movement. Before Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, or Rosa Parks were civil rights activists and writers such as W.E.B. DuBois, Booker T Washington, and George Edwin Taylor, who many people don't know about. George Edwin Taylor was the first African American to run for President back in 1904, and I believe that Taylor was meant to run for president. He began a chain of movements and inspired other African American political activists to get more involved with the evolution of African American rights.  He was an orphan when his fate began because he was luckily placed in a home where they encouraged him to pursue a future in writing and politics. His foster father, Nathan Smith, was able to get him to go and get an education. Which helped him in the future because he was already writing for newspapers etc. Taylor was involved in local and state governments an...

BP2 - Johnson's Impeachment

Image
Everything you say as a public figure is always heard.  "Pubic opinion in this country is everything!"Abe Lincoln once said. With that statement, it makes me think that the president has a very high standard and image to uphold. So what does a president have to do in order to be impeached? They have to commit a high crime such as treason or bribery but back in the 1800's, firing a senator would do and that is exactly what Andrew Johnson did. Johnson was sworn into office after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, while the United States was going through Reconstruction. President Lincoln just had passed the Emancipation Proclamation which stated that all persons held as slaves were now free, and with it being that time, Johnson was not in favor of the policies. He let personal beliefs reflect his decisions as President by immediately passing "black codes" to control the behavior and labor of African Americans, once he was sworn into office. Once this was b...

BP1 - The Lucky One-Third

Image
When entering a classroom, you have the expectations of being successful and most are but less than one-third of that class will graduate within six years. That number is pretty small when it comes to a classroom of twelve students. You look around your class and think you might be one of them but what stops you from graduating within six years you ask? It could be a number of things, ranging from financial issues, the lack of transportation, or just the work ethic of the individual. The school gives you the opportunity to graduate within four years, if you play your cards right but sometimes life happens. Some students have a job, they need to go to school part time, or maybe they have only certain days available because of maternal reasons, so the option to essentially go at your own pace is very accessible. So why is it only one-third? Well the research collected was only of one group, first time full-time students. The problem with this is that until recently the Department of ...

About Me

Image
A reminder for myself.  I am entering GGC fresh out of high school and I really am looking forward to the new year. I have yet decided what my major will be, but from many sources I've heard I have some time. I work at a mom and pop diner, and I absolutely love my job. Aside from working and school, I spend most of my time with friends and family. Currently, I live on my own and I'm just trying to get by but it can be difficult at times. I aspire to become a teacher, either high school or college level and that's why I'm here. Math is what I initially wanted to teach but I'm leaning more towards social sciences. Hopefully to be successful enough to travel around the world more and live comfortably. I'm young, but I don't plan on having kids, or just not until I'm stable with my own life, so my drive to be successful is primarily for myself. That might sound conceited but I am a Leo. I'm also weirdly obsessed with potatoes.
